Sports: are we losers or winners?

There are lots of people who think: "Spain? Bah, Spain never wins anything!". Well, this is not true, of course. Let's prove it with some examples!

Spain is well-know as a country of football (or  soccer, as you call it). Our first victory took place in 2008 when we won the EuroCup. If you don’t know what it is, don’t worry, we'll explain it for you: it's a tournament whose participates are all the European countries, but only one can win…SPAIN! But that was only the beginning because we won a new title in 2010, the World Cup with Iniesta as MVP player of the final.

But, are we just good in football? Well, the answer is NO!
In the last few years the name of Spain has been pronounced in different sports and we're very proud because of that.
We have Rafael Nadal, a tennis player who is  number one and has defeated one of the best tennis players of  the world, Roger Federer.
Another example of our sport victories is Fernando Alonso, the youngest double world champion in Formula 1 history (at only 24 years), until Vettel broke his record a few weeks ago.
Other sport where a Spaniard has written his name in golden letters is basketball:  Paul Gasol is a great basketball star, and we guess you know him because he plays in the NBA, with LA Lakers! But Gasol isn’t our only player in US:  his brother Mark plays with the Memphis Grizzlies.
In water sports, specially synchronized swimming, Spain os in the map too. Our girls won the gold medal in the FINA World Championships in 2009.
We hope you've found this information interesting, and please ask everything you want about Spanish sports or about anything you like.
What kind of sports do you like?

  1. Hola!! Soy Jen de UNH

At least from what I have heard, a lot of people in the US think of Spain when they think of soccer. I actually was in Europe for the Euro Cup in 2008. After I studied in Oviedo, I backpacked with two friends of mine. Every city we went to, we saw hundreds of people sitting outside watching the soccer games! I was in a bar with friends for the final game and was so excited when Spain won!

When you refer to age in English, you would say "at only 24 years old".

Los Angeles Lakers, can be shortened to LA Lakers if you want to sound ultra informal! :)

"in the map"...the saying is "on the map"

Great Job!! I'm having so much fun reading your blogs! They are really interesting!
